You could make at home. Here’s why you shouldn’t.
Resin, spray paint, soldering, sanding — the things that make a home unlivable are exactly what the lab is built for. Work at full volume, without worrying about the smell, the noise, or what it does to your walls.
At home a project can sit half-done for months. The lab is open every evening and weekend, so there’s no closed day to plan around — and people who notice your progress make it much harder to let something quietly stall.
Working alone, a hard problem can end a project entirely. In the lab, chances are someone nearby has hit the same wall before — or is figuring it out right alongside you.
Most makers stick to one discipline — not because they decided to, but because it’s the only one they ever had the tools and support to try. Here, the equipment and the people who already use it are both in the room.
Sharing a room with 3D modellers, painters, and coders does something a solo desk can’t — it feeds ideas you wouldn’t have reached for alone.
Every member here is a maker — fine art, miniatures, electronics, or something in between. It’s a culture of people who help each other, share ideas, and show up when someone’s stuck.
A 3-hour class produces a time-bound experience. You follow the instructor, complete the project, take it home. Without continued access to the environment, the tools, and the people who share the interest, the learning fades — most of what you learnt is gone within a month.
This is not a failure of instruction. It’s structural. A single session cannot create the repeated practice that builds lasting capability, and it cannot create the community that makes you want to come back.
What builds skill over time is two things together: a consistent environment where you can practice freely, and a community of people at different stages of the same journey to lean on. MakerCraft is both.

Benches, paint stations, an airbrush booth, soldering irons, hand tools and full art supplies — yours to use whenever you’re here.
The machines are run by us. FDM and resin 3D printers, a laser cutter, heat press, vinyl cutter and an Epson L15150 A3+ printer. You bring the file or the idea, we run the job and tell you what it’ll cost first.
What that gets you: no levelling a bed, no chasing a failed print at midnight, no working out why the laser is cutting shallow. No worrying that you’ll break something expensive. The machine is our problem — the design is yours.
It also means one project can’t tie up a printer for three days, and we can batch similar jobs so everyone’s work moves.
The MakerCraft Telegram group carries the practice between visits. People share work in progress, ask questions, and give each other feedback.
It’s the support network that keeps you going when you’re not in the lab — something no single class gives you. And it’s open, so you can look before you join anything.

Do I need any prior maker experience?
No. MakerCraft is built for a range of experience levels, from complete beginners to practising makers. Most members build capability over time through the space and the community, not before joining.
Do members run the machines?
No — our team runs all the machines. You submit a job, we confirm it and give you an estimate, and we run it.
Most people find this is the part they’d have wanted anyway. Machine time in a makerspace is mostly troubleshooting: bed levelling, warping, adhesion, supports that won’t come off, a laser that’s cutting shallow because the lens needs a clean. That’s our job now. You don’t have to learn it, you don’t have to debug it at 11pm, and you never have to worry that you’re about to damage something expensive. You get to spend your time on the design.
Everything that isn’t a machine — benches, paint, airbrush, soldering, hand tools — is yours to use freely.
How does fabrication work, then?
Bring the file or the idea — in the lab, or message us directly. We’ll confirm what you want, tell you what it will cost, and put it in the queue — Residents go first. We don’t promise turnaround times, and we’ll flag a design we think will fail before we run it rather than after. If a job fails because of us, we re-run it at our cost.
Is MakerCraft a class or a self-directed membership?
Self-directed. There’s no instructor leading a session and no syllabus — you work on your own projects at your own pace, any evening or weekend. Structured teaching, like the MakerCraft Master Series, exists separately for those who want it.
Is there an induction?
Yes — one general safety induction before you start, covering the bench and paint areas, materials handling, ventilation and emergency procedures. It takes about half an hour. There’s no per-machine induction any more, because members don’t operate the machines.
Are materials included?
Bench consumables and art supplies are included within reasonable use — paint, brushes, adhesives, the everyday things. Fabrication materials and machine time are charged per job: filament, resin, laser materials and printing. Residents pay half the public rate. Rates are on the fee schedule and we’ll always quote before starting.
Can I leave unfinished projects at the lab?
Storage is a Resident feature — a 30cm bay kept between visits. On the trial and as a Regular, work goes home with you between sessions. If leaving a project set up matters to you, Resident is the one, and you can upgrade at any point including during your trial. Anything we’ve fabricated for you can be collected when it’s ready.
Is there always a staff member present?
No. The lab is often unstaffed, and members work here on their own — at the benches and paint stations. There’s CCTV throughout for security, but nobody watches it live, so if you’re working alone and something goes wrong you’d need to call for help yourself. Fabrication only happens when a staff member is present to run it.
What are the opening hours?
Weekdays 6:30–11:00pm and weekends 3:00–11:00pm, every day of the week. No dark days.
Can I use MakerCraft for commercial projects?
Yes, and it’s encouraged. Whether you’re making things to sell, prototyping, or building something on the side, this is a place to do that work. Sell it through your own channels and we take nothing. If you’d like us to sell it for you, that’s a separate consignment arrangement with a commission — just ask.
Can I see what it’s like before committing to anything?
Yes — our Telegram group is open to anyone. Members post work in progress, ask questions and help each other out, so it’s a fair picture of what the place is actually like. Join it, read for a while, and start your 30 days free whenever you’re ready.
Can I just come for one evening?
Yes, once you’ve done the trial — a Drop-in evening is $28. We keep it for people who are already inducted, because every first visit needs a safety induction and that’s built into the trial rather than a single evening. If you find yourself buying two passes in a month, stop: Regular is $48 and unlimited.
Can I cancel or change my membership?
Cancel any time by email, effective at the end of your current billing cycle — you keep access through the period you’ve paid for. There’s no notice period and no minimum term. Moving between Regular and Resident is just as easy.
How am I billed?
HitPay emails you an invoice each month covering your membership plus any fabrication from the previous month, itemised. You pay it however you like — card, PayNow, or any other method HitPay offers. We never see or store your card details.
