Belief-based education · MacPherson, Singapore

About
Makerschool

We build the upstream condition that determines whether
everything else in education works.

Our conviction
Every child is more capable than they believe.
Makerschool exists to close that gap.

Singapore’s education ecosystem measures performance without addressing
the belief that produces it. The supplementary industry — tuition,
enrichment, student care — replicates the same problem at greater cost.

Makerschool builds the category no one else has named: belief-based education.
The upstream condition that determines whether instruction, enrichment,
and skill development actually produce lasting results.

This is grounded in Albert Bandura’s research on self-efficacy —
the finding that a student’s belief in their own capability is a stronger
predictor of academic performance than actual ability. We build the belief first.
The capability follows.

The 8-C Framework

Traditional report cards measure whether a student can recall what was taught.
They don’t measure whether a student can think independently, persist through failure,
or add value to the people around them. The 8-C Framework measures what we actually
believe matters — the behaviours that determine whether a person can make something
real, difficult, and original.
01
Cognition
Thinking

Navigating uncertainty. Identifying challenges and working out a plan independently — without waiting for an instructor to provide the answer.

02
Communication
Explaining

Sharing ideas clearly. Describing not just what was made, but the process used and the logic behind every choice.

03
Command
Managing yourself

Staying on task. Managing time, staying safe, and remaining focused without needing constant reminders from an instructor.

04
Character
Grit

Not quitting. Staying positive after a mistake and immediately using a failed build as data for the next attempt.

05
Craft
Skill

Doing excellent work. Precision in using tools and a deep understanding of materials to ensure the final product is professional-grade.

06
Contribution
Helping

Adding value to others. Proactively supporting teammates and designing projects that solve problems for people or the environment.

07
Curiosity
Asking questions

Asking why and what if. Understanding how things work rather than just following a list of steps.

08
Care
Respecting the space

Treating the environment as a reflection of the work. Keeping the workspace organised and leaving the lab in a Day Zero — perfect — state.

The 8-C Framework is observation-based, not test-based. Scores reflect what the instructor witnesses during the session. Results are reported to parents at the end of each term as the Maker Capability Score.

Built by someone who has taught in over 100 schools.

Ivan founded Makerschool after more than a decade as a STEAM specialist
working across primary, secondary, and special education settings in Singapore.
Over that time he observed the same pattern repeatedly: students who were
technically capable but unable to start, recover from failure, or trust their
own judgment. The problem was never ability. It was belief.

Makerschool is his attempt to build — at a small, deliberate scale —
the environment that produces a different outcome. One lab. One team.
Real tools. Students who leave with proof of what they can do.

Ivan holds a Google Certified Educator Level 2 certification and is
currently completing a Master of Education in Educational Leadership
at the University of Essex.
